About Us

Drone Systems Lab at University of the West of Scotland is dedicated to developing intelligent and high-performance systems for autonomous drone services in security, transport, environmental monitoring, maritime, and precision agriculture.

Established in 2020 by Dr. James Riordan, the lab has quickly grown into an interdisciplinary centre of excellence consisting of senior faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and PhD students from various disciplines including data science, electronic and computer engineering, cyber security, civil engineering, and social science.

Our lab leads a £7 million research project portfolio that is funded by UKRI, European Commission, Natural Environment Research Council, The Data Lab, and industry partners such as Nvidia and Codeplay Software.

Our members are expert advisors to the European Union Aviation Safety Agency and EUROCAE standards steering groups, and multiple international drone initiatives including Amsterdam Drone Week 2024.
